118 Jacques de Sève (active 1742–1788) – La Chèvre de Juda (The Goat of Judea) – Copperplate Engraving by Charles Baquoy from Histoire Naturelle by Buffon (Late 18th Century)

This elegant copperplate engraving titled La Chèvre de Juda (The Goat of Judea) is taken from Histoire Naturelle, Générale et Particulière by Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon. The animal stands on a rocky ledge beside weathered stumps of timber, evoking a dry and ancient landscape that suggests its Middle Eastern origins. The plate, marked Tome XII, Pl. XXI, was drawn by Jacques de Sève and engraved by Charles Baquoy. As with other plates from the series, the composition balances anatomical realism with aesthetic refinement, in keeping with the Enlightenment ideal of combining science with visual beauty.
Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707–1788), was one of the foremost naturalists of the 18th century, whose comprehensive Histoire Naturelle aimed to describe the entire natural world with unprecedented detail and rigor.
