This original copperplate engraving, titled Limaçons à Bouche demironde (Semi-rounded-mouth land snails), is Plate 40 from Antoine-Joseph Dézallier d’Argenville’s influential work L’Histoire naturelle éclaircie dans deux de ses parties principales, la lithologie et la conchyliologie, published in Paris by De Bure l’Aîné in 1742. The engraving presents 32 labeled specimens of snail shells, each rendered with precise detail to highlight differences in form, pattern, and texture. This plate was designed by François Boucher and engraved by Quentin Pierre Chedel, merging scientific taxonomy with the decorative flair of the Rococo.

The plate bears a dedication to Monsieur Bon le Père, President of the Royal Society of Sciences of Montpellier and corresponding member of the Paris and Montpellier Academies, further emphasizing the Enlightenment context of collaborative scientific advancement.
