126 Giuseppe Maria Terreni (1739–1811) – Opussum – Copperplate Engraving from Il Gazzettiere Americano (Livorno, 1763)

This original copperplate engraving titled Opussum was published in Il Gazzettiere Americano, the first Italian edition of the American Gazetteer, printed in Livorno in 1763. The image features a stylized depiction of a New World opossum with three young in a lush tropical setting, framed by palm trees and vegetation. The composition blends natural observation with theatrical elements, typical of Enlightenment-era zoological art.
The engraving is signed by Giuseppe Maria Terreni, a Livorno-based engraver active in the second half of the 18th century. Il Gazzettiere Americano expanded upon the original London edition by including new Italian maps and illustrations, offering a panoramic survey of the Americas — its fauna, cities, people, and industries. The work was published by Marco Coltellini in Livorno in 1763.
