This original hand-colored copperplate engraving of the tropical fruit Genipa, marked “Tab. 437”, was printed in 1797 on ribbed paper as part of the botanical series Botanische Drucke. The illustration shows a cross-section and detailed anatomy of the fruit with scientific precision, accompanied by labeled parts for botanical reference. The shading, fine hatching, and subtle coloring reflect the Enlightenment era’s focus on both aesthetic quality and scientific clarity in botanical documentation.

Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656–1708) was a pioneering French botanist and professor at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. He was instrumental in formalizing plant taxonomy and is credited with establishing the concept of genus in botanical classification. Tournefort undertook scientific expeditions across Europe and the Near East, producing foundational herbals that influenced generations of naturalists. His contributions to botanical science laid essential groundwork for later taxonomists, including Carl Linnaeus.
