This original copperplate engraving, marked “Tab. 438,” depicts various botanical parts of the Manihot plant, commonly known as cassava. Published in 1797 on ribbed paper and hand-colored with precision, this scientific illustration presents detailed views of the plant’s flowers, seed capsules, and internal structures, labeled A to G for taxonomic reference. The plate is part of the comprehensive botanical series Botanische Drucke, based on the plant studies of Joseph Pitton de Tournefort, and exemplifies the Enlightenment-era focus on botanical accuracy and classification.

Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656–1708) was a pioneering French botanist and professor at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. He was instrumental in formalizing plant taxonomy and is credited with establishing the concept of genus in botanical classification. Tournefort undertook scientific expeditions across Europe and the Near East, producing foundational herbals that influenced generations of naturalists. His contributions to botanical science laid essential groundwork for later taxonomists, including Carl Linnaeus.
