Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656–1708) was a pioneering French botanist and professor at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. Tournefort undertook scientific expeditions across Europe and the Near East, producing foundational herbals that influenced generations of naturalists. His contributions to botanical science laid essential groundwork for later taxonomists, including Carl Linnaeus.
