148 Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656–1708) – Ananas comosus – Hand-Colored Copperplate Engraving (1797)

This original copperplate engraving of Ananas comosus (pineapple), drawn after studies by Joseph Pitton de Tournefort and published in 1797, presents a detailed and refined botanical representation of the fruit, hand-colored on ribbed paper. Marked “Tab. 427,” the plate is part of the celebrated series Botanische Drucke, which comprises 223 engravings based on Tournefort’s botanical classifications. The image shows the pineapple in naturalistic detail, with careful attention to texture, form, and botanical structure, highlighting its significance among the edible fruits of the Bromeliaceae family.
Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656–1708) was a pioneering French botanist and professor at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. He was instrumental in formalizing plant taxonomy and is credited with establishing the concept of genus in botanical classification. Tournefort undertook scientific expeditions across Europe and the Near East, producing foundational herbals that influenced generations of naturalists. His contributions to botanical science laid essential groundwork for later taxonomists, including Carl Linnaeus.
