This original hand-coloured engraving depicts Inula Dysenterica, commonly known as Common Fleabane. It is from James Sowerby’s seminal botanical work English Botany or, Coloured Figures of British Plants, with their Essential Characters, Synonyms and Places of Growth, published by J. Davis in London between 1790 and 1814. This first edition of the extensively illustrated series is celebrated for its detailed and scientifically accurate depictions of British flora.

James Sowerby was an English naturalist and illustrator renowned for his meticulous botanical illustrations. His English Botany comprises thousands of finely rendered plant images, greatly advancing the study and appreciation of British plant species and making botanical knowledge accessible to both scientists and the general public.
