99 Carlo Faucci – Tarabita Bridges for Humans and Animals – Engraving (18th Century)

This rare 18th-century engraving by Carlo Faucci depicts traditional rope bridges used in mountainous regions of South America. Titled in Italian as “Ponte di Liana o Beiuco. 2. Tarabita per gl’Animali. 3. Tarabita per gl’Uomini,” it shows three types of vine or rope suspension bridges, including a basic hanging footbridge and two variations of the tarabita—a rope-based transportation system for animals and people crossing steep valleys. The engraving illustrates daily rural life and indigenous engineering techniques employed to overcome difficult terrain using natural materials. These forms of transport were essential in Andean and Amazonian areas where conventional bridges could not be built.
Carlo Faucci was an 18th-century Italian engraver known for his finely detailed copperplate illustrations in works of travel, geography, and ethnography. His engravings appeared in publications documenting the customs and technologies of distant cultures, especially in South America. Faucci’s work is appreciated for its clarity, composition, and contribution to Enlightenment-era European visual documentation of the wider world.
