35 G. Bodenehr the Elder (1664–1750) – Map of Winoxbergen – Engraving (c.1700s)

This finely engraved plan depicts the fortified town of Winoxbergen (modern-day Winoksbergen or Bergues) in northern France near Dunkirk. The image shows an idealized military layout with a central citadel, surrounding street grid, churches including St. Winox and St. Peter, and radiating star fortifications typical of Vauban-style design. Prominent features such as bastions, gates (e.g. Cassel Gate), and canals leading to Dunkirk are labeled. The compass rose and scale are subtly included, and the engraving is signed “G. Bodenehr fec.” in the lower right.
Georg Christoph Bodenehr the Elder (1664–1750) was a German engraver and cartographer, part of the prolific Bodenehr publishing family in Augsburg. He is known for his detailed city plans and panoramic views that documented European
fortifications during the 17th and 18th centuries.
