26 Joshua Archer (c.1792–1863) – Map of Devonshire – Engraving from England and Wales Delineated by Thomas Dugdale (1858)

This detailed Map of Devonshire was engraved by Joshua Archer for Thomas Dugdale’s Curiosities of Great Britain, England and Wales Delineated, published by L. Tallis in 1858. The map is filled with finely engraved detail showing towns, roads, rivers, railways, and administrative divisions, with a key and divisions table included. Archer’s signature appears at the bottom: “Drawn & Engraved by J. Archer, Pentonville, London.” The plate was first published in 1842 and reused in subsequent editions through 1860, including in The Universal English Dictionary and Tallis's Topographical Dictionary of England & Wales.
Joshua Archer (c.1792–1863) was a Devon-born engraver and mapmaker known for his precise and widely reproduced steel engravings. Despite professional hardships — bankruptcy in 1835 and imprisonment for debt in 1845 — Archer continued working until his final years in Islington, where he lived with his family of fellow mapmakers.
