This engraved city plan shows Antwerp in 1654 as a fortified stronghold on the river Schelde (Scaldis Fluvius), with bastions, moats, and inner structures carefully rendered in geometric precision. The numbered key to the right identifies major buildings, gates, and religious sites, reflecting the urban and military complexity of the time. A decorative cartouche with the city’s coat of arms sits in the upper left corner, while the prominent southern fortress “Isabelle” is clearly shown across the river.

This map was created by Caspar Merian, son of the renowned Matthäus Merian, and a distinguished engraver in his own right. Caspar Merian continued the family publishing tradition, producing detailed topographical engravings and city views for the Topographia Germaniae and related atlases. The plate belongs to a series now preserved in collections such as the Felixarchief in Antwerp.
