This detailed map of Antwerp from 1692 depicts the fortified layout of the city along the Escaut River, highlighting bastions, citadels, and the intricate network of streets and fortifications. A lettered index in the upper left lists major city gates and landmarks, while the lower portion is adorned with an elaborate allegorical cartouche showing classical figures and personifications of commerce and military power. The map is annotated in French and includes a scale marked “Echelle de 300 Toises.”

This work was produced by Pieter Mortier I, a prominent Amsterdam-based mapmaker and publisher known for his richly embellished atlases and city plans. Mortier was instrumental in bringing French cartographic style to Dutch engraving workshops, and his maps are especially valued for their decorative and topographical precision.
