This hand-coloured engraving by Joseph Pitton de Tournefort, after drawings by Claude Aubriet, originates from Institutiones rei herbariae. Editio tertia... published in Paris in 1719.

This work is considered one of Tournefort's most important contributions to botanical science. He developed a systematic classification of plants into genera, which laid the foundation for modern plant taxonomy. His approach heavily influenced Carl Linnaeus, who later named the genus Tournefortia in his honour.

Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656–1708) was a French botanist and explorer, renowned for his work in the classification and description of plant species. He traveled widely in Europe and the Near East, collecting specimens and refining the structure of botanical science. His meticulous observations helped shape the discipline of plant taxonomy during the Enlightenment period.
