"Plan du Kaire et des Environs"

This finely detailed engraved map titled Plan du Kaire et des Environs depicts the city of Cairo and its surrounding area during the early 19th century. The Nile River runs prominently through the composition, with towns, roads, and military positions clearly marked. An inset in the lower right corner shows the layout of the fortified Cairo citadel (Château du Kaire). The map was produced in the context of Napoleon's Egyptian campaign and reflects the era’s scientific and strategic interest in the geography of the region.

The engraving was executed by John Cooke, a British engraver active in London during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He worked from 50 Howland Street and was known for his precise work in topographical, naval, and historical subjects. This map was published in 1802 in Paris by Pierre Didot as part of the celebrated Voyage dans la Basse et la Haute Égypte by Vivant Denon, documenting Napoleon's expedition to Egypt.
