This elegant chromolithograph presents four exotic butterfly species from the Heliconidae family: Lycorea Atergatis, Olyras Crathis, Athesis Clearista, and Thyridia Ædesia, all originally described by Edward Doubleday. The illustration was drawn and lithographed by William Chapman Hewitson and printed by Hullmandel & Walton, renowned lithographers of the 19th century.
Hewitson (1806–1878) was a British naturalist, entomologist, and illustrator, widely respected for his meticulous and aesthetically refined depictions of butterflies and beetles. His illustrations played a significant role in Victorian-era natural history publications, admired both for their scientific accuracy and their delicate beauty.
