139 Pierre Joseph Bonnaterre & Robert Benard – La Gibele, L'Aphie, La Vandoise & Variété de l’Alose – Hand-Coloured Engraving (1788)

This hand-coloured engraving features four freshwater fish species: La Gibele (Crucian carp), L'Aphie, La Vandoise (Dace), and a variation of the Alose (Shad). The work is part of the monumental Encyclopédie Méthodique, published in Paris between 1789 and 1832 under the direction of Panckoucke. Created during the Enlightenment, the encyclopedia aimed to systematically organize all branches of knowledge.
Abbé Pierre Joseph Bonnaterre (1752–1804), a French priest and naturalist, authored the ichthyology section of the Encyclopédie. He compiled illustrations from previous authorities such as Bloch and Gronovius, and his contribution remains a significant milestone in the scientific study of fish. The engravings were executed by Robert Bénard, a prominent engraver of the period known for his precision and involvement with Diderot and d’Alembert’s original Encyclopédie.
