This maritime engraving from the France Maritime series depicts the dramatic entrance to the Black Sea, with the Bosphorus Strait framed by coastal hills, lighthouses, a steamship, and local wildlife in the foreground. The composition conveys the strategic and picturesque importance of this passage, which linked the Mediterranean with Eastern Europe and the Ottoman Empire.

The image was drawn by Michel Bouquet, a 19th-century French artist known for his architectural and marine views, and engraved by François Auguste Rumigny, a skilled engraver and lithographer active during the mid-19th century. The work was printed by Chardon, rue Hautefeuille, 3 in Paris. The annotation "Amédée Gréhan / France Maritime" refers to the editor of the broader project that compiled French naval and colonial scenes from around the world.
