This abstract lithograph, published in Derrière le Miroir, exemplifies Jean-Paul Riopelle’s energetic and spontaneous gesture-driven style. Composed of earthy brown blocks and bold black and blue lines, the piece reflects Riopelle’s connection to nature and his ongoing exploration of dynamic form. Created during his involvement with Lyrical Abstraction and the Art Informel movement, the work captures the essence of post-war experimentation in Europe. It was originally included in the 1966 issue of Derrière le Miroir, a French art publication known for collaborations with leading avant-garde artists. The work was published by Galerie Maeght in Paris, 1966.

Jean-Paul Riopelle (1923–2002) was one of the most influential Canadian artists of the 20th century. Born in Montreal, he later moved to Paris where he became a key figure in the Art Informel and Lyrical Abstraction movements. In 1948, he co-authored the Refus Global manifesto, which played a pivotal role in the development of modern art in Quebec. Known for his powerful expression, dynamic brushwork, and nature-inspired compositions, Riopelle exhibited internationally, including at the Venice Biennale and the São Paulo Bienal.
