This hand-coloured engraving features a botanical study of the cucumber plant (Cucumis), with the French name Concombre noted at the top. The illustration depicts the flower in different stages of bloom, the full fruit, a sliced cross-section, and its seed (labeled A–H). The engraving is scientific in nature, with precise observation and fine line work typical of Tournefort’s botanical publications, and would have served both educational and taxonomic purposes.

Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656–1708) was a pioneering French botanist known for formalizing plant classification based on genera. He served as professor at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris and authored several influential works on botany. His illustrations, often accompanied by Latin and French nomenclature, helped lay the groundwork for the later Linnaean system.
