Finely engraved map of Italy originates from Vaugondy & Delamarche’s ”Nouvel atlas portatif : destiné principalement pour l’instruction de la jeunesse ”.
Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688–1766) was a French cartographer and geographer, known for his work in the 18th century. He succeeded his father, Jean-Baptiste Nolin, in the family cartographic business and became the official geographer to the King of France. Vaugondy is best known for his detailed maps and atlases, especially the "Atlas Universel," which reflected the latest geographical knowledge of his time. His work played a significant role in the development of cartography during the Age of Enlightenment.
