Includes inset map of Baya de todos Santos, elaborate cartouche, 2 compass roses and richly embellished vignettes of native Brazilian life and animals.The interior of the interior of the map includes vignettes of indigenous animals and native scenes, including cannibalism. Inset within a decorative border is a small map of "Baya de todos Sanctos". In the sea are monsters, a galleon and two compass roses. ”Carte Du Cours Du Maragnon ou de la Grande Riviere Des Amazones…Levee en 1743 et 1744….par M. de la Conaemine…” Fine Map of the Amazon River From the Exciting La Condamine ExpeditionDetailed regional map, showing the course of the Amazon River from the Andes to the Atlantic. It was originally drawn by Charles Marie de la Condamine, a French savant who journeyed to South America to measure the arc of the meridian and returned to the Atlantic via the Amazon.The map shows the northern section of South America, which is today comprised of Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana. Here, the main political units are Brazil, held by the Portuguese; Guiane, which is split between Dutch and French control; and the Spanish and Portuguese missions in north-central and northwest South America. These missions were run principally by the Jesuit order.The main focus is the Amazon River and its tributaries. Overlaying the map is another, phantom river. This is the outline of the most famous map of the Amazon River to precede this example. It was printed in Quito in 1707, the first map to be printed there. The author was Father Samuel Fritz, a Jesuit missionary, who is referenced in several notes on this map.The title explains that this map was taken from a variety of modern manuscript sources, but the main source was la Condamine, a French academician who had been part of a scientific voyage to Peru in the 1740s. Another note at the bottom of this example explains that this map was originally published by la Condamine, which it was, in 1745. The present edition was published in another important book, Prevost’s&nbsp;L'Histoire Generale des Voyages,&nbsp;here published in a Dutch edition.Antoine Francois Prevost (1697-1763) was a soldier, a priest, and a novelist. Fleeing after he left his abbey without leave, Prevost ended up in England. Later, he lived in The Hague and, after reconciling with his religious order, in Chantilly, and, while in exile again, in Brussels and Frankfurt. From 1746 to 1759 he published the first fifteen volumes of the&nbsp;Histoire générale des voyages,&nbsp;which encompassed historical and recent voyages to destinations around the world. He was trained by Bernard Picart&nbsp;and his style resembles that of the elder man. Van der Schely&nbsp;was known for intricately engraved portraits and frontispieces. ”Pas-kaart Van de Grand Banq by Terra Neuff met alle syn Diepten en Vaademen”, published by C. Vogt, Amsterdam. Decorative sea chart showing Terra Nova in North East America. The coastline of Terra Nova is providing a lot of information on small place names along the coast. It shows as well sand banks, depths and anchor places. Below we find largely shown "Grand Banq" in the centre of the map. Grand Banque is one of the most important fishing grounds in the North Atlantic Ocean. In the lower right corner with an allegoric title cartouche and a mileage scale in three languages. Johannes van Keulen (1654 in Deventer – 1715 in Amsterdam) was a 17th-century Dutch cartographer. He published the influential nautical atlas the Zee-Atlas and the pilot guide Zee-Fakkel (meaning Sea-Torch in English). In 1678 Johannes van Keulen established himself in Amsterdam and in 1680 he obtained a patent from the States of Holland and West Friesland allowing him to print and publish maritime atlases and shipping guides. These were books of maps and descriptions of itineraries, used by helmsmen for safe navigation. The patent was a kind of protection against illegal copying of produced books and charts. This was especially important for the atlases which were made with extensive initial costs. Van Keulen named his firm 'In de Gekroonde Lootsman' ('In the Crowned Pilot'). Soon Van Keulen struck a deal with cartographer Claes Jansz. Vooght. From 1681 onwards the Nieuwe Lichtende Zee-Fakkel appeared, a five-volume atlas for which Vooght compiled the maps[1] and which was illustrated by Jan Luyken. The five volume Zee-Fakkel made Johannes van Keulen famous. The Zee-Fakkel was published in 5 volumes between 1681 and 1684 containing over 130 new charts.
