Expressive ink and wash drawing depicting a theatrical bust portrait of a comic actor wearing a broad-brimmed hat and a pleated ruff collar. The lively expression, exaggerated features, and costume reference stage traditions of 17th–18th century comedy, likely linked to French or Italian commedia dell’arte. Though the identity of the artist remains unknown, the confident brushwork and humorous expression suggest an accomplished hand active in the academic or satirical tradition. With 4 engraved frontispieces, 24 partly folded copper engravings (one printed on both sides), 3 full-page text engravings, a double-sided woodcut plate, and woodcut text illustrations. Contemporary leather bindings (spines partially worn, scuffed, and bumped). Reference: ZDB 552526-3. Hayn/Gotendorf IV, 430: "An important encyclopedia addressing contemporary issues of the time." Details on the total number of copper engravings and other illustrations published with this work were not found. Includes illustrations on human and animal deformities, sea monsters, the construction of an air machine, agricultural tools, lamps and stoves, religious martyrdoms, spiders, garden and city planning, and a woodcut of a rattlesnake believed to possess magical powers.

A French translation of Antonio de Solís’ famous chronicle Historia de la conquista de México, originally written in Spanish. This 1730 Paris edition, titled Histoire de la Conquête du Mexique ou de la Nouvelle Espagne, is one of the most influential European accounts of Hernán Cortés’s campaign against the Aztec Empire. Richly illustrated with 6 folding copperplate maps and plates, including scenes of battles and native rituals, the book is a key reference for colonial and Mesoamerican studies. Condition ReportBound in period full leather with raised bands and gilt tooling. The binding shows minor wear, and the plates exhibit some foxing, but the book is otherwise in excellent condition. This original lithographic cover was published by Maeght Éditeur in Paris in 1979 for issue No. 240 of Derrière Le Miroir, entirely devoted to Edward Kienholz. The composition, printed on thick wove paper, features a juxtaposition of speaker components and reflective planes in tones of black, yellow, and metallic gray. This visual motif mirrors Kienholz's interest in media, communication systems, and objecthood—central concerns of his assemblage practice. His engagement with themes of surveillance, technology, and institutional control is abstracted here into a striking modernist graphic. Edward Kienholz (1927–1994) was a leading figure in American installation art and assemblage. He first gained critical attention in the 1960s for provocative works addressing race, poverty, war, and American consumer culture. His work is housed in major institutions including MoMA, LACMA, and the Stedelijk Museum. Kienholz collaborated with his wife, Nancy Reddin Kienholz, from the 1970s onward, developing a rich visual language of social critique through immersive environments.
