Der aus dem Reiche der Wissenschaften wohlversuchte Referendarius.Volumes I–VI (of 12) in 3 volumes. Augsburg, Selbstverlag, 1750–54. 4° (20.5 x 16 cm). With 4 engraved frontispieces, 24 partly folded copper engravings (one printed on both sides), 3 full-page text engravings, a double-sided woodcut plate, and woodcut text illustrations. Contemporary leather bindings (spines partially worn, scuffed, and bumped). Reference: ZDB 552526-3. Hayn/Gotendorf IV, 430: "An important encyclopedia addressing contemporary issues of the time." Details on the total number of copper engravings and other illustrations published with this work were not found. Includes illustrations on human and animal deformities, sea monsters, the construction of an air machine, agricultural tools, lamps and stoves, religious martyrdoms, spiders, garden and city planning, and a woodcut of a rattlesnake believed to possess magical powers.

A French translation of Antonio de Solís’ famous chronicle Historia de la conquista de México, originally written in Spanish. This 1730 Paris edition, titled Histoire de la Conquête du Mexique ou de la Nouvelle Espagne, is one of the most influential European accounts of Hernán Cortés’s campaign against the Aztec Empire. Richly illustrated with 6 folding copperplate maps and plates, including scenes of battles and native rituals, the book is a key reference for colonial and Mesoamerican studies. Condition ReportBound in period full leather with raised bands and gilt tooling. The binding shows minor wear, and the plates exhibit some foxing, but the book is otherwise in excellent condition.
