This finely detailed map titled Carte du Gouvernement de Béarn depicts the administrative and ecclesiastical divisions of the Béarn region in southwestern France, including Aire and surrounding areas. The map includes elaborate cartouches, scale bars (Eschelle d’un lieu et demy de Gascogne), and a decorative legend explaining the symbols used for towns, parishes, castles, and noble houses. It is a visually rich representation of the territory, adorned with allegorical cherubs and a dedication to the Bishop of Aire. Despite the title on the cartouche naming Pierre Duval, this specific edition was engraved and published by Jean-Baptiste Nolin in 1695. Jean-Baptiste Nolin (1657–1708) was a prominent French cartographer and engraver, known for his detailed maps and collaborations with renowned geographers such as Vincenzo Coronelli. He held the prestigious title of "Engraver to the King" and was active in Paris during the late 17th century. His works are notable for their precision, artistic decoration, and significance in early modern French cartography. This hand-coloured copperplate engraving presents a bird’s-eye view of Nancy, capital of the Lorraine region. The map shows the double-walled city fortifications with detailed depictions of the medieval core and the newer Renaissance city expansion. A numbered legend in French identifies major landmarks, including gates, churches, towers, and civic buildings. The title cartouche in Latin and French notes the year of depiction as 1617 (forma quam hoc Anno MDCXVII habet), while the engraving itself appeared in the second volume of Civitates Orbis Terrarum. This view was published in Civitates Orbis Terrarum, the monumental six-volume city atlas compiled by Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg. The work became the most comprehensive visual record of early modern cities, combining cartographic accuracy with decorative richness. Nancy is portrayed here in its transformation into a major administrative and military center under the Dukes of Lorraine. This original hand-coloured copperplate engraving offers a bird’s-eye view of the Spanish city of Valencia, labeled in Latin as Valentia quondam Edetanorum urbs, once the principal city of the ancient Edetani. The layout reveals an intricate street network enclosed by fortified walls and water channels. Characteristic elements of Civitates Orbis Terrarum include heraldic shields, Renaissance figures in local costume, and visual emphasis on the urban fabric. The engraving was published in the second volume of Civitates Orbis Terrarum (1575), the landmark city atlas compiled by Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg. This vast work became the largest and most influential city book of the early modern period, providing a visual chronicle of Europe’s major urban centers. The map captures Valencia at the height of its architectural and economic development in the late 16th century.
