Description
"Judith with the head of Holofernes" is a stunning etching by the renowned Italian artist, Giuseppe Zocchi. First published by Joseph Wagner in Venice between 1760 and 1770, this masterpiece remains a highlight of Zocchi's oeuvre and a significant contribution to the canon of Baroque art.
The etching depicts the biblical heroine Judith, standing triumphantly with the decapitated head of the Assyrian general Holofernes in her hand. Her confident and powerful posture is captured brilliantly, and the rich details in the scene are beautifully rendered through Zocchi's skilled hand. The etching's use of light and shadow creates a dramatic chiaroscuro effect, heightening the intensity of the scene and adding depth to the characters.
