This finely executed engraving by Boetius Adams Bolswert depicts Saint Pelagia in humble prayer, kneeling within a rocky cell and holding a rosary. Shrouded in a voluminous cloak, her figure is turned in profile, her head bowed in penitence and devotion. The stark architectural elements and contrast between light and shadow evoke the solitude of her ascetic retreat. Titled Sancta Pelagia and numbered “8.” at the lower margin, the print forms part of a larger series of devotional saint portraits. A red collector’s stamp is present in the lower corner, denoting provenance from a notable European collection.

Boetius Adams Bolswert (c.1580–1633) was a prominent Flemish engraver renowned for his religious compositions and his work with Peter Paul Rubens. His engravings are distinguished by their meticulous line work, atmospheric depth, and emotive power. Bolswert’s prints served both as devotional images and as artistic interpretations of Christian sainthood in the Baroque period.
