Description
This etching by Jan Luyken depicts the tumultuous event known as the French Fury in Antwerp, which occurred on January 17th, 1583. The scene portrays marauding French soldiers under the command of the Duke of Anjou being chased out of the city through the Kipdorppoort gate. The chaos and violence of the event are vividly captured, with the French soldiers shown engaged in looting and pillaging. This print was intended to be used as an illustration in J. le Clerc's Histories of the United Netherlands, providing a visual representation of this significant historical event. Print was published in Amsterdam.
