882 William Hogarth (1697-1764) - Receipt for March to Finchley and Boys Peeping at Nature

Engraving on wove paper originates from "The Works of William Hogarth", published by Baldwin, Cradock and Joy in 1822 with the original plates restored by James Heath. The Heath edition was the last to print directly from Hogarth's original engraved plates.

William Hogarth (1697–1764) was an English painter, printmaker, and satirist, widely regarded as one of the pioneers of modern Western satire. He is best known for his narrative artworks, which vividly depicted the social and moral issues of 18th-century England. Hogarth's most famous works include series such as A Harlot's Progress (1731), A Rake's Progress (1734), and Marriage A-la-Mode (1743-1745), which used humor and symbolism to critique society's flaws. In addition to his satirical prints, he was a skilled portraitist and engraver. Hogarth's art combined storytelling with sharp social commentary, leaving a lasting legacy in both visual art and cultural history.
