Rare hand-coloured woodcut originates from work ”Parnassus medicinalis illustratus, or: A New and Thus Far Unseen Book of Animals, Herbs, and Mountains, Along with the Salernian School. With commentary by Arnoldus Villanovus, and the Prognostications of Life & Death by Hippocrates; Also a Detailed Account of Distillation, Purging, Sweating, Scraping, and Bloodletting…”. The work was published by Johann Görlin in Ulm, 1662.

Johann Joachim Becher (1635-1682) was a German alchemist and economic theorist who advocated for economic regulation through mercantilist measures such as protective tariffs and manufactures. He gained extensive knowledge in medicine, chemistry, physics, and politics. After converting to Catholicism, he became a professor in Mainz in 1657 and later served as the court physician and economic advisor to the Elector.
