This engraving is from the Dutch emblem book "Alle de Wercken" by Jacob Cats. Titled "Winste en Verlies" (Profit and Loss), the illustration depicts two men in a winter setting. One man is shearing a sheep for its wool, while the other is shaving a pig, an unproductive task. The Latin motto "Afsay rumori, e poca lana," which translates to "More noise than wool," highlights the contrast between the two activities, a moral lesson on effort versus result.

Jacob Cats was a Dutch poet, lawyer, and politician. He held high positions, including that of Grand Pensionary of Holland. He was extremely popular as the author of emblem books, which consist of engravings with moral and didactic verses. His work had a great influence on Dutch culture.
