This engraving is from one of the famous emblem books by Jacob Cats, a Dutch poet and statesman. Titled with the Latin motto "Fac Sapias, et Liber Eris" (Be Wise, and You Shall Be Free), the illustration depicts a man with a device on his ear and a rope tied to his leg, symbolizing his lack of freedom. The scene, like all of Cats's works, was used to convey a moral lesson. It was part of his extensive work "Alle de Wercken" (The Complete Works) and is identified by the Roman numeral XXIV.

Jacob Cats was a Dutch poet, lawyer, and politician. He held high positions, including that of Grand Pensionary of Holland. He was extremely popular as the author of emblem books, which consist of engravings with moral and didactic verses. His work had a great influence on Dutch culture.
