7186 Jacob Cats (1577–1660) – Hunting Scene – Engraving (c. 1655)

This engraving is from one of the famous emblem books by Jacob Cats, a Dutch poet and statesman. It depicts a hunting scene: in the center is a group of hunters, one on horseback, with dogs attacking a wild boar. The illustration, like all of Cats's works, was used to convey moral or ethical lessons. It was part of his extensive work "Alle de Wercken" (The Complete Works).
Jacob Cats was a Dutch poet, lawyer, and politician. He held high positions, including that of Grand Pensionary of Holland. He was extremely popular as the author of emblem books, which consist of engravings with moral and didactic verses. His work had a great influence on Dutch culture.
