47 Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703–1772) – Map of the Strait of Le Maire – Engraving

This finely engraved map by the renowned French hydrographer Jacques-Nicolas Bellin depicts the Strait of Le Maire, separating Tierra del Fuego from the Isle of States at the southern tip of South America. Titled Carte du Détroit de le Maire, it was based on the journals of various navigators and published for the Histoire générale des voyages or similar French naval atlases in the mid-18th century.
The chart includes soundings, anchorages, and coastal features essential for navigation in one of the most treacherous sea passages. Bellin’s careful cartographic style and scientific precision reflect the Enlightenment pursuit of accurate geographic knowledge for maritime exploration.
