This detailed 16th-century engraving presents two distinct maps on a single spread: "TVRINGIAE NOVISS. DESCRIPT." (Newest Description of Thuringia) on the left, and "MISNIAE ET LVSATIAE TABVLA." (Map of Meissen and Lusatia) on the right. Both maps meticulously illustrate these historical regions in Germany, depicting their intricate networks of towns, rivers, and topographical features. Each map includes a title cartouche and scales. This cartographic work is characterized by its precision and aesthetic appeal, typical of the golden age of Dutch cartography. It originates from Abraham Ortelius's monumental Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, considered the first true modern atlas.

Abraham Ortelius (1527–1598) was a Flemish cartographer and geographer, widely regarded as the creator of the first true modern atlas, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, first published in 1570. Based in Antwerp, Ortelius revolutionized cartography by standardizing map formats and including lists of authors and sources, making geographical knowledge more accessible and organized. His meticulously engraved maps were celebrated for their accuracy, clarity, and decorative qualities, significantly influencing European understanding of global geography during the Age of Exploration. Ortelius's work laid the foundation for modern atlas production.
