33 James Cook – A Draught of Bonthain Bay, Island of Celebes – Copperplate Map

This finely engraved 18th-century nautical chart titled A Draught of Bonthain Bay depicts the coastal geography and anchorage soundings of Bonthain Bay (modern-day Bantaeng) in the south of Sulawesi, historically known as the Island of Celebes. The map details the topography, reef lines, safe anchor zones, and notable features such as “The Waterfall,” “Market-place,” and “Point Widenpook.” It notes that the bay lies approximately 30 leagues southwest of Macassar. Based on surveys conducted during Captain James Cook’s voyages or related British naval expeditions, the chart reflects the meticulous hydrographic standards of Enlightenment-era maritime exploration.
