25 François Valentijn (1666–1727) – Map of Persia, Arabia, and the Turkish Empire – Engraving (1724-1726)

This engraved map, from François Valentijn's monumental work Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën, provides a detailed representation of the Middle East and Central Asia. The map covers territories from the Black and Caspian Seas down to the Persian Gulf, encompassing Persia, Arabia, and a portion of the Ottoman Empire. It is rich in geographical detail, showing river systems, mountain ranges, and numerous cities and towns, serving as a historical record of early 18th-century European cartography of the region.
François Valentijn was a Dutch minister, naturalist, and historian, primarily known for his extensive work Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën (Old and New East-India). This monumental five-volume work was a comprehensive survey of the Dutch East Indies and included detailed descriptions of the geography, customs, and natural history of the region. His work is considered a cornerstone of early Western ethnography and cartography of Asia.
