This detailed engraved map is titled "Map of the Entrance to the Canton River" and provides a historical chart of the waterway leading to the city of Canton, in present-day Guangzhou, China. The map, from Abbé Prévost’s Histoire générale des voyages, was compiled from "the most recent observations" of navigators and naval engineers. It includes a detailed view of the coastline and the islands within the bay, such as the Island of Macao and the Island of Lantau. The chart is an example of the period's efforts to create accurate navigational aids based on new information from global exploration.

Abbé Antoine François Prévost was a French novelist and historian, best known for his novel Manon Lescaut. His most ambitious work was the monumental Histoire générale des voyages, which compiled and edited reports from global explorations. The work was highly influential, serving as a comprehensive source of information on geography, ethnography, and natural history for a wide European audience.
