This detailed engraving is a hydrographic chart titled "Map of St. Helena Bay" from Abbé Prévost's monumental Histoire générale des voyages. The map, which was "drawn on the remarks of navigators," provides a coastal survey with depth soundings in marine leagues. It shows the coastline of the bay with mountainous relief and a compass rose, reflecting the scientific and exploratory efforts of the 18th century. The chart served as a crucial navigational tool and a visual record of newly documented coastlines for a European audience.

Jakob van der Schley was a Dutch engraver, draftsman, and miniature painter. He worked in Amsterdam and was highly regarded for his fine engravings, particularly of portraits, landscapes, and maps. He was a frequent contributor to a number of important 18th-century publications, including the comprehensive travel compilation, Histoire générale des voyages, for which he provided numerous illustrations and maps based on original reports and drawings.
