François Valentijn (1666–1727) was a Dutch minister, naturalist, and prolific author whose extensive travels and research in the Dutch East Indies formed the basis of his encyclopedic publication. His multi-volume "Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën" is celebrated for its comprehensive accounts of the history, geography, ethnography, and natural history of the region.
