This detailed engraved map, titled "PORTVGALLIAE quae olim Lusitania, hodie regnum est." (Portugal, which was formerly Lusitania, today is a kingdom), was designed by Fernando Alvaro Seco and published by Abraham Ortelius. It first appeared in the 1579 Latin addendum to Ortelius's groundbreaking "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" (Theatre of the World), considered the first true modern atlas. The map meticulously illustrates the geography of Portugal, detailing rivers, cities, mountains, and administrative divisions, reflecting the advanced cartographic knowledge of the 16th century, a period marked by intense Portuguese exploration and imperial expansion.

Abraham Ortelius (1527–1598) was a Flemish cartographer and geographer, renowned for creating the "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" in 1570, which is widely regarded as the first true modern atlas. Ortelius's meticulous compilation of maps from various sources, presented in a uniform format, revolutionized cartography and made geographical knowledge accessible to a broad European audience. Fernando Alvaro Seco (fl. mid-16th century) was a Portuguese cartographer whose surveys and designs were foundational for maps of the Iberian Peninsula in 16th-century atlases.
