6520 Georges Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon – Le Loir (The Dormouse) – Engraving

This detailed 18th-century engraving features a dormouse in its natural habitat, accompanied by anatomical diagrams of its reproductive organs. Designed by Bureau (known as "l'Ameriquan") and engraved by Motte, this plate is part of Georges Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon’s renowned and monumental "Histoire Naturelle, générale et particulière" (Natural History, General and Particular), specifically from Volume 8 on quadrupeds, published in 1760. The print meticulously combines a naturalistic portrayal of the animal with precise scientific diagrams, showcasing the comprehensive approach to zoological study characteristic of the Enlightenment era.
Georges Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707–1788), was a prominent French naturalist, mathematician, cosmologist, and encyclopedist. His "Histoire Naturelle" was an ambitious attempt to synthesize all known knowledge about the natural world, profoundly influencing zoology and scientific thought for centuries. Bureau (fl. mid-18th century) was a draftsman who contributed designs to Buffon's plates. Motte was an engraver who worked on various scientific publications of the period.
