100 François Valentijn – Adam's Peak (Sri Lanka) – Copperplate Engraving – 1724

This rare 18th-century engraving presents the iconic Adam’s Peak (also known as Sri Pada), a sacred mountain in Sri Lanka venerated by Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and Christians alike. The image depicts pilgrims ascending the summit to view the legendary footprint impression believed to be of Buddha, Shiva, or Adam, depending on the religious tradition.
The print originates from François Valentijn’s monumental work Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën, published by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in the early 18th century. Valentijn was a Dutch minister and naturalist stationed in the East Indies who documented the geography, ethnography, and culture of the region with both scientific curiosity and colonial interest. The detailed rendering of vegetation, terrain, and figures climbing the steep mountain path reflects both the topographical fidelity and narrative richness characteristic of VOC-era engravings.
