41 Frederik de Wit (1629–1706) – Two-Part Map of the Rhine River and the Coast

This original copperplate engraving by Frederik de Wit presents a two-part cartographic depiction. The upper map titled Tractus Rheni et Mosae Inferioris shows the upper Rhine and Maas River regions across parts of present-day Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. The lower map details the coastal area of the Netherlands bordering the North Sea (Mare Germanicum), including Zeeland, Holland, and Utrecht provinces. Richly engraved with fine topographical detail, political borders, rivers, and settlements, both maps are adorned with Baroque cartouches and decorative maritime figures.
Frederik de Wit was a prominent Dutch cartographer and engraver whose Amsterdam workshop became one of the most important producers of maps and atlases in the late 17th century. His finely executed engravings are noted for their geographic accuracy, visual clarity, and artistic decoration. De Wit’s work reflects the Dutch Golden Age of cartography and was widely collected and referenced throughout Europe.
