70 Georg Andreas Wolfgang – Naaman Washes in the Jordan – Engraving -Lüneburg, 1672

This 17th-century engraving depicts the biblical episode of Naaman, the Syrian commander, bathing in the Jordan River to be healed of leprosy, as instructed by the prophet Elisha (2 Kings 5). Naaman is shown in the foreground, humbly immersed in the river, while his soldiers and chariots stand behind him on the rocky bank. The moment visualizes both physical cleansing and spiritual transformation, with expressive figures and a carefully staged landscape that leads the viewer's eye from the earthly to the divine.
The composition was drawn by Matthias Scheits, a Hamburg-based artist known for his vivid religious scenes, and engraved by Georg Andreas Wolfgang, a skilled German printmaker active in Augsburg. The print was produced by the Stern’sche Druckerei in Lüneburg as part of a Lutheran visual program intended to bring scripture to life through powerful iconography.
