This meticulously detailed copperplate engraving presents two panoramic bird's-eye views of prominent French cities. The upper panel depicts "TVRONES vulgo Tours" (Tours, commonly), showcasing the expansive urban landscape of this "amplissima Galliae" (most spacious city of Gaul/France), with its architecture, churches, and river. The lower panel illustrates "ANDAGAVVM. / vulgo Angiers." (Angers, commonly), detailing its urban fabric, waterways, and surrounding cultivated lands. Both views feature figures engaged in daily activities, reflecting the era's bustling life. The print captures the architectural splendor and strategic locations of these French urban centers in the late 16th century, serving as significant historical and topographical records.

Georg Braun was a German topographer and editor, and Frans Hogenberg was a Flemish engraver. Together, they were the principal compilers and publishers of the Civitates Orbis Terrarum (Cities of the World), a monumental six-volume atlas published between 1572 and 1617. This groundbreaking work provided bird's-eye views and city plans of hundreds of major cities across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas, serving as an indispensable visual record of urban landscapes during the Renaissance. Their collaboration produced highly influential and aesthetically significant geographical works.
