19 Sebastian Münster (1488–1552) – Map of Germany and its Enclosed Landscapes – Woodcut (c. 1544-1628)

This meticulously detailed woodcut presents a comprehensive map titled "Teutschland mit seinem gantzen Begriff und eingeschloßen Landschafften." (Germany with its entire concept and enclosed landscapes.). The map intricately delineates the geography of Germany and its surrounding regions, including parts of Bohemia, Silesia, Austria, Poland, Hungary, Belgium, and France. It showcases a dense network of rivers, numerous towns and cities, mountain ranges, and forests, reflecting the detailed cartographic efforts of the 16th century. This print offers a valuable historical perspective on the political and physical landscape of Central Europe during the early modern period.
Sebastian Münster was a pioneering German cartographer, cosmographer, and Hebrew scholar. He is most renowned for his monumental Cosmographia (first published in 1544), which was one of the earliest German-language descriptions of the world. This hugely popular and influential atlas-chronicle included hundreds of woodcut maps, city views, and illustrations, covering a wide array of geographical, historical, and cultural subjects. Münster's efforts significantly contributed to the spread of knowledge during the Renaissance, making his Cosmographia a landmark achievement in publishing history.
