18 Sebastian Münster (1488–1552) – Map of Switzerland and Surrounding Countries – Woodcut (c. 1544-1628)

Sebastian Münster was a pioneering German cartographer, cosmographer, and Hebrew scholar. He is most renowned for his monumental Cosmographia (first published in 1544), which was one of the earliest German-language descriptions of the world. This hugely popular and influential atlas-chronicle included hundreds of woodcut maps, city views, and illustrations, covering a wide array of geographical, historical, and cultural subjects. Münster's efforts significantly contributed to the spread of knowledge during the Renaissance, making his Cosmographia a landmark achievement in publishing history.
