9 Sebastian Münster (1488–1552) – Map of Spain and Portugal (Iberian Peninsula) – Woodcut (c. 1544-1628)

This detailed woodcut presents a comprehensive map titled "Hispanien nach aller seiner gelegenheit in Bergen Stetten Volckern Königreichen Wässern und Inseln" (Spain with all its situation in Mountains, Cities, Peoples, Kingdoms, Waters and Islands). The map intricately delineates the geography of the Iberian Peninsula, showcasing its mountain ranges, rivers, numerous cities, and political divisions, alongside parts of France and North Africa. This print reflects the meticulous cartographic efforts of the 16th century, capturing the geographical and political landscape of a significant European region as understood in the early modern period.
Sebastian Münster was a pioneering German cartographer, cosmographer, and Hebrew scholar. He is most renowned for his monumental Cosmographia (first published in 1544), which was one of the earliest German-language descriptions of the world. This hugely popular and influential atlas-chronicle included hundreds of woodcut maps, city views, and illustrations, covering a wide array of geographical, historical, and cultural subjects. Münster's efforts significantly contributed to the spread of knowledge during the Renaissance, making his Cosmographia a landmark achievement in publishing history.
