7 Abraham Ortelius (1527–1598) – Map of Moravia – Copperplate Engraving (1570)

This highly detailed copperplate engraving presents a significant map titled "MORAVIA. QUAE OLIM MAP. ROMANORUM SEDES." (Moravia. Which was once the seat of the Romans.). The map intricately delineates the region's geographical features, including its complex network of rivers, numerous towns, forests, and mountainous areas, bordered by Bohemia, Silesia, Austria, and Hungary. A decorative cartouche in the upper left provides the title and a dedication to the noble Moravian barons. This map reflects the advanced cartographic techniques and detailed surveying of the late 16th century, making it a valuable historical and geographical document.
Paulus Fabritius was a 16th-century cartographer and surveyor, notably responsible for the original survey of Moravia that formed the basis for this map. Abraham Ortelius, a Flemish cartographer and geographer, is widely recognized as the creator of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Theatre of the World), first published in 1570, which is considered the first true modern atlas. Ortelius meticulously compiled and published maps from various sources and cartographers, including Fabritius, significantly contributing to the dissemination of geographical knowledge across Europe.
